Economic development officer

Work on projects to bring businesses and facilities into an area. This will create jobs for local people and improve the environment.

What it's like

You would work on projects to bring businesses and facilities to an area and create jobs for local people.

It would be your responsibility to increase jobs and economic growth in your local area.

You’d work with the local community, the local councils and companies to plan and develop projects. You’d need to be determined and persuasive.

You’d find out what kind of employees and facilities a business is looking for and show how your area suits its needs. You’d explain planning regulations so the company can easily meet these requirements.

Your tasks might include: 

  • working on neighbourhood renewal projects 

  • attracting sustainable businesses and development projects 

  • building partnerships with communities, business networks and local government 

  • bidding for local and national funding for projects and managing budgets 

  • setting up training schemes for local businesses and unemployed people 

  • advising local businesses and community groups 

  • promoting the local area to attract new employers and increase tourism 

  • working on neighbourhood renewal projects 

  • organising business fairs and giving presentations about your area 

You could be involved in all of these activities or you might specialise in a particular one, such as bidding for funding.

Hours

You'd typically work standard office hours Monday to Friday, with occasional longer hours to meet project deadlines. Part-time work or job sharing may be available.

Environment

You'd be mainly office-based, but would spend some of your time attending meetings and visiting companies and development sites.

Travel

You'd travel to attend meetings and visit companies and development sites in your local area or region.
