What it's like
You would see people with health conditions and give them remedies based on the idea of homeopathy.
Homeopathy is a complementary or alternative therapy. It is based on the idea that substances which cause symptoms can, in extremely small amounts, be used to cure or ease them.
You might see people experiencing problems such as headaches, stress, arthritis and eczema.
You’d ask people about their lifestyle and emotional issues as well as their physical symptoms. Your sensitive and non-judgemental approach will help you build trust and rapport with each person you see.
You would:
Discuss their symptoms and their wider life
Choose an appropriate homeopathic remedy
Prepare and dispense the remedy
Treat the person during visits, or explain how they can use homeopathic remedies at home
Keep detailed notes
Advise on wider health and lifestyle issues
Refer people to health practitioners if necessary
You could see people who might be referred by their GP or come to see you on a private basis.
You’d be running your own business, so you’d need to handle tasks like administration, finance, marketing and advertising your practice.
Hours
Most homeopaths are self-employed. This means that you could choose your own working hours, although you may have to offer evening and weekend appointments to meet the needs of your patients. Most homeopaths work between one and three days a week.
Environment
You may work from your own home, from an alternative therapy clinic or sometimes a GP surgery or hospital. You may also visit patients in their homes.
Travel
You may visit patients in their homes.

You would need a Diploma/Licentiate in Homeopathic Medicine qualification recognised by one of the professional Homeopathy bodies such as the Society of Homeopaths.
There are currently no Diploma/Licentiate in Homeopathic Medicine courses available in Scotland but full-time, part-time and partial distance learning courses are available in England and Wales; see the Society of Homeopathy for details.
Homeopathy is no longer recognised or offered as treatment by NHS England.
Qualifications and experience that show understanding of health and wellbeing and caring for people such as SQA Wider Achievement Wellbeing Award (SCQF Level 3-5).
Once qualified it is not yet compulsory to register with one of the homeopathy professional bodies but it is highly recommended.
To be approved for membership of the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme run by Disclosure Scotland.
